- Level 1 Strength & Conditioning Coach (ASCA)
BACKGROUND &Â APPROACH
Dr. Johanna Cheong’s journey into osteopathy was inspired by her grandmother’s quiet yet powerful example of helping others. From an early age, she was drawn to understanding how the human body works and how it can recover from pain or injury. This curiosity led her to pursue her studies in Osteopathy at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia, where she developed the skills and patient-focused philosophy that shape her practice today.
Johanna believes that every patient’s story is important. She takes time to listen carefully, not only to the symptoms but also to the lifestyle and goals of each individual. Her treatments aim to support the body’s natural ability to heal, blending osteopathic techniques with tailored movement strategies. Patients often describe her as empathetic and approachable, appreciating how clearly she explains what’s happening in their bodies and how they can be active participants in their recovery.
As an ASCA Level 1 Strength & Conditioning Coach, Johanna also brings exercise prescription and functional rehabilitation into her treatments. This integration allows her to go beyond symptom relief and help patients rebuild strength, improve mobility, and reduce the risk of recurring issues.
Her work also extends to children and adolescents. During a comprehensive internship in Paediatric Manual Medicine at a rural Australian clinic, Johanna treated a wide range of conditions, from musculoskeletal to developmental and respiratory concerns. Parents value her gentle, reassuring manner and her ability to adapt care to the unique needs of younger patients.
Distinctions & Impact
Johanna is recognised for creating meaningful, long-term improvements in her patients’ health. While pain relief is often the first step, many also notice they move with greater ease, feel more resilient, and gain confidence in their bodies. She places strong emphasis on giving patients tools and strategies they can use beyond the treatment room, ensuring lasting results.
Her patients range from athletes returning to sport, to professionals managing the physical demands of work, to families seeking gentle support for their children. Across this diversity, one consistent theme stands out: people often remark on how supported and understood they feel in her care. They value not only the treatment itself but also the time Johanna spends explaining their condition and guiding them through their recovery.
Ongoing Learning & Professional Development
Johanna is dedicated to continually developing her skills. Alongside her advanced osteopathic training and strength & conditioning practice, she is also undertaking bodywork studies with Somatic Therapy Asia.
Somatic therapy explores the deep connection between mind and body. Through practices such as movement, breath work, touch, visualisation, sound, and creative expression, it helps people build awareness of their bodies and shift long-held patterns. This approach supports rehabilitation from injuries, improves motor control and coordination, and can ease persistent or chronic pain. Many people also find it enhances their overall function, resilience, and confidence in movement.
By weaving these practices into her professional development, Johanna is broadening the ways she can help her patients — not only to recover from pain, but also to move forward with lasting health and wellbeing.
Philosophy
At the heart of Johanna’s work is a simple philosophy: to empower people to feel confident in their bodies and in their capacity to heal. This belief is reflected in the welcoming environment she has created at Back In Health Osteopathy, where patients consistently describe.
